Why are green burials gaining favor?
Wish to return to nature - we are in a time where living our lives in a more natural and organic manner matters to us. Concern over the environment - we are becoming increasingly aware of our human impact on the world and the size of our carbon footprint. Respect for the human body - we want our bodies returned to the earth in the most non-invasive and simple manner possible. Desire to state one's personal values - we want to actively make a statement about what we have valued in life at the time of our death. Need for a ritual allowing authenticity and presence - we have a strong desire to be engaged and create meaning in our lives through ritual, especially as we say goodbye to a loved one. Compatibility with both religious & nonreligious beliefs - we live in a world of diverse faith traditions, and a green burial honors this. Desire to be a part of something bigger than oneself - we are able to preserve land, as a burial ground, for future generations to enjoy the natural world. Preference to cut costs - we do not equate the amount of money spent on a funeral with our love for the deceased. |
