Funeral Director Intern

Job Type: Full-time and Part-time (Job Share)

A Sacred Moment is seeking a Funeral Director Intern who is an intuitive and empathetic individual that has compassion for families and a positive spirit. We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and is happiest when the “i’s” and “t’s” are dotted and crossed. This person sees, and can act upon, the big picture—from the initial compassionate contact with our family through all of the various stages of funeral arrangements, to completion. The Funeral Director Intern will care for decedents, oversee meaningful ceremonies, viewings and funeral services, in person and via livestreaming, in a variety of settings.

Currently we are seeking two part-time Funeral Director Interns that will job share this full-time position. This position has the opportunity to be extended to a full-time role with the right candidate. Full-time is a 32–40 hour a week position, depending on workload. Part-time job share is a 20-24 hours per week position, depending on workload.

About the Position

The Funeral Director Intern sees the big picture—from the initial contact with our family through all of the various stages of funeral arrangements, to completion. The Funeral Director Intern meets with our families, communicates with our care center, cares for the deceased, attends services and coordinates details around documents, approvals for cremations and/or burials, confirm receipt of caskets, urns and keepsakes, and special items to be sent via courier. This position is on phone “stand-by” two weeks per month, off hour availability will be required. This involves answering calls at night and weekends from the answering service, typically when families are calling and needing to speak to a funeral director and/or staff member. The Funeral Director Intern plays a critical and central role within our office team, where you will find supportive leadership, a passionate staff and an engaging work culture. 

Other typical duties of the Funeral Director Intern include:

  • Answering phone calls, inquires, and addressing caller’s requests

  • Upon receiving death notification calls, completing intake paperwork and dispatching removal team

  • Talking with families pre-planning for an imminent death

  • Creating case files, calling families establishing contact, sending online biographical form and scheduling arrangement meetings and follow-up information/links

  • Tracking office calendar, coordination with team and resolving any schedule conflicts

  • Meeting with families making funeral arrangements via phone or Zoom

  • Caring for decedents, overseeing meaningful ceremonies, viewings and funeral services, in person and via livestreaming, in a variety of settings

  • Communication with vendors, dispatching contractors, and responding to doctors to sign death certificates

  • Proofreading of detailed documents such as death certificates, military paperwork, etc.

  • Electronic input, tracking and ordering of all death certificates

  • Daily tracking and updating status of cases in Osiris

  • Processing of payments together with goods and services

  • Caring for cremated remains including the filling of urns and keepsakes

  • Ordering and tracking the receipt of urns, product, flags, death certificates

  • Tracking obituary emails from families and communicating updates to marketing team

  • Scheduling Tahoma military services and honors

  • Upkeep of the arrangement room, other public areas and backroom on a daily basis

  • Managing and stocking products and educational/promotional materials

  • Local travel as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Note

Funeral Director Intern will be expected to have a valid driver’s license and insurance using their personal vehicle for local travel. Reimbursement for mileage based on IRS standards. Qualified candidates must have or be eligible to obtain a Washington State Funeral Director Intern license.  Use of personal cell phone for texting and timely communication required.
