Elizabeth (Betty) C. DeLong
February 7, 1916 - April 24, 2018
Betty Clare DeLong was born on February 7th, 1916, in Point Roberts, Washington to parents, Arthur and Ella Hoeruegel. She passed away on April 24, 2018 in her own home in Stanwood. She was 102.
Betty was a former resident of Whatcom County, graduating from Meridian High School as Valedictorian of her class of 1933. She fell in love and married Bill DeLong in 1934. They moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1949 and ran a dairy farm for many years. After Bill’s death in 1977, she moved to Mount Vernon. She has lived in Stanwood for the last 24 years.
Mother had 11 babies, and raised 9 of them to adulthood. She was a consummate homemaker. Her cooking skills, especially her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls were favorites of all visitors, of which there were many. She could put together a meal for 10 or 60 people without blinking an eye. She loved flowers and gardening, working alongside her children at all times. She taught the value of hard work and its rewards to all her children. She was a steadfast and loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.
Betty worked at the Emporium in Mt. Vernon for 5 years. After she retired, she traveled to Europe, The Holy Land, and The Panama Canal. She was a bold and adventurous person who enjoyed life to the fullest. She volunteered at the DePaul House in Sedro-Woolley, and the Stanwood Food Bank.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Bill, and children: Michael, Jean, Brad, Billy, and Betty DeLong Littfin. One brother and 4 sisters also predeceased her. Her granddaughter, Janis Gores, passed away in 2017.
She is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Leonard) Schorno in Quincy, WA; Bonnie (John)Stark and Brenda (Bruce Fink)Armenia in Tucson, Arizona; Bernita Bland in Clovis, CA; Beverly (Jerry)Pearson and Belinda DeLong in Stanwood, WA. She has 13 Grandchildren, and many Great, and Great Great Grandchildren.
A special thank you to our sister, Belinda, for the loving care she took of Mom for these last years. Her generosity of spirit and great faith are greatly appreciated. Also, thank you to the many caregivers and Hospice workers, who gave much love and care to Betty, especially in the last months.
Mom, we can see you dancing with Dad in the heavens, united with your loved ones. May you rest in peace.
