Dedicated librarian and devoted animal lover

Mary Hannah Douglas, a dedicated librarian and devoted animal lover, died on January 17, 2008. A resident of Buri en, Mary was diagnosed with cancer last June and died at age 64 at the Bailey- Boushay House in Seattle. Mary was born on May 7, 1943 in Cincin nati, Ohio and grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon area where her parents, Joella and Samuel Isa, were teachers. She graduated from Clackamas High School in 1961 and then attended the University of Washington where she received her Master�s Degree in Librarianship in 1966. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Dr. George W. Doug las, a botanist and ecologist, who died in 2005. Mary�s library career entailed many things from cataloging work at the Uni versity of Alberta, UW and the Auburn City Library to reference work at the King County Library System�s Auburn branch. However, Mary�s library pas sion was assisting the underserved. She was instrumental in starting the Auburn Library Talk Time program and assist ed in coordinating citizenship classes at the library. It was not unusual for Mary to drive about the community spreading the word regarding library programs and services at neighborhood tiendas, offices and restaurants. Mary enjoyed growing ornamental house plants and was a serious student of horticulture. She also felt passionately about animals and was devoted to her beloved cats Juniper, Mojo and Cloudy. She was a kind, gentle woman and will be greatly missed by her stepfather, Wendell Checketts, long-time family friend Franco Flores, and friends John and Joy Lund and Bonnie Cline. She will also be remembered with fondness by library staff and patrons as well as members of the community.

Funeral Information

A memorial service will be held on Sat urday, February 23rd, 1:00 p.m., at the Graham Visitors Center, Washington Park Arboretum, 2300 Arboretum Drive East in Seattle.
