Davis Andrew Martin

August 19, 1924 - September 13, 2019

Davis Andrew Martin was born on August 19, 1924, in New Orleans, LA to Andrew and Frances Martin and died on September 13, 2019, in Edmonds, WA at the age of 95.

He attended public school in New Orleans but soon discovered that there was much more to learn at the local Carnegie Library. Reading was as essential as air to Davis, and he especially loved history, geography, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft.

In 1942 he joined the Army Air Corps and was sent to Ipswich, England, as a radio operator, although he never received any training.  In January 1945 he  joined the 89th Infantry Division as part of the last U.S. troops to cross the Rhine River on their march into Germany, and was awarded the Bronze Star. During that time, he also supplemented his military income playing poker and gambling.  After World War II he joined the Army Reserve, later retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

Davis graduated from the University of Washington and worked for Seattle City Light until his retirement in 1984. He was a wonderful dancer and in 1962 at a Mountaineers dance, he met someone very special, Nona Schultz. They  were married for 56 years, and raised four children together. Davis could not have been a more kind or loving husband, father and grandfather. At the age of 74, through impressive perseverance and determination, he earned a black belt in karate.  He received a standing ovation at the belt award ceremony.

Davis was preceded in death by his parents, sister Frances (Abbie) Menge, and sister Wanda (Derek) McKay. He is survived by his brother Jerry Pruiett, wife Nona, four children, Elizabeth, Laura, Bardi, and Dieter Martin and six grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
