Rev. Maynard L. Haaland

January 11, 1915 - March 18, 2011

Maynard Lowell Haaland went to be with his Lord March 18, 2011.

Maynard was born January 11, 1915 in Wallowa County, Oregon and grew up on the family farm. After graduating from high school, he became more interested in flying than farming. In June 1936, Maynard graduated from Boeing Schol of Aeronautics, airplane mechanics course in Oakland, California and was hired at Seattle Boeing plant. While there he completed his private pilot flight course in 1938. He met and married Frances Thompson of Seattle in 1941.

Shortly after the Pearl Harbor attack, Maynard enlisted in the U.S. Navy as 3rd Class Petty Officer and was assigned to a VB 138 anti-submarine patrol squadron as a navigator. His squadron was based in the South Pacific Solomon Islands. During one routine patrol, the aircraft developed engine problems. Maynard began to pray for himself and his crew. This experience sealed his call to go into the ministry and service to his Lord the rest of his life.

When World War II ended in 1945, Maynard enrolled in L.I.F.E. Bible College in Los Angeles, California. In February 1949 he received his ordination to be a minister of the Foursquare Church. At that time he and his wife Frances, also a minister, were appointed pastors of the Foursquare Church at 2431 Wetmore Avenue in Everett. In the mid 1960’s, Everett School District purchased the Wetmore property and the church relocated to 6110 Colby Avenue. There he served as pastor until 1970. From that time on, he continued to serve the church in various ministries until his passing. In 2009 he received national recognition for 60 years of faithful service to the Foursquare Gospel Church.

His wife of 42 years, Frances, passed away in 1983. He married Nell Owens in 1984. They served together in visitation ministry until her death in 1998. He lived his final three years at Paradise Island Adult Family Home in Everett.

He is survived by his brother and wife, Richard and Elsie Haaland of Rathdrum, ID, sisters Doris Howard of Woodinville, and Rose Hunter of Marysville; stepchildren Maravine Gunderson, Orville, David and Greg Owens, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, Frances and Nell; parents Carl and Macel Haaland; brothers Edward and Willard Haaland; sister, Esther McQuatters.

Funeral Information

Graveside services with military honors will be held at Floral Hills Cemetery, Friday, March 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Memorial services will be held at New Life Church, Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM.
